Can fighting techniques be used as self defense techniques?

Ah, the age old dilemma. Many people will continue to train year round to learn fighting techniques. Things such as boxing, MMA, all of these are fighting techniques designed to be used in competition sport. But can these techniques actually be used as proper self defense techniques as well? Let’s go over that exact question.
First off, let’s identify some common fighting techniques. The common jab is the first technique. We now have two staple techniques, because the jab is usually followed up by a cross punch. The round house kick is another common technique seen in fighting. You can temporarily cripple your opponent when you use these devastating kicks properly. These are the three staple fighting techniques we will talk about today.
First up, is the jab. Are jabs simply useful only as fighting techniques or do they have a lot of use as a proper self defense technique? They are actually not useful at all in most self defense situations. You see, in competition sport jabs are used as a quick strike, not a full out self defense blow. In real life, self defense situations are over in a few quick seconds, so a jab will not be very useful.
Next we have the cross punch. One example of a very useful fighting technique is cross punches, which can be used as self defense techniques. The cross punch can take out an attacker very easily because it is a very powerful strike. One or two cross punches can put down even the strongest man if placed properly. A cross punch would be a good technique to practice since it can be used as either.
And last, what about a roundhouse kick? Can roundhouse kicks be used as proper self defense techniques or are they strictly for fighting? Some say yes, others say no. Roundhouse kicks to the head can be very dangerous and can potentially put you in a very bad situation. However, if you make a properly placed kick to your opponent’s groin you can instantly win the fight. Just make sure you don’t kick above the belt and you’ll be good to go.
So there you have it. As you can see, not all fighting techniques can be used as self defense techniques, but almost all self defense techniques can be used as fighting techniques.
Self Defense Training Vs. Self Defense Videos

You have probably noticed you usually have two options if you’ve ever been interested in real self defense. First you need to find a qualified personal defense instructor who will work with you in either a group or one on one setting. The other option you have is to search around try to find a good set of self defense videos. But the question arises, are self defense videos even near as good as in person self defense training? We’re going to be looking at this question to see if one has a huge benefit over the other.
With in person self defense training, you have a live instructor that can help you along the way and answer any questions. If you need an immediate answer this is especially beneficial. With self defense videos, your question might not be answered for at least a few hours. And that’s only if you’re able to find an instructor who answers questions. Many instructors will simply ignore your question and you will have to look for forums that may have the answer. This also brings the risk of getting incorrect information from someone due to the anonymous nature of internet forums. This wouldn’t be a problem if you could train with the instructor in person.
You also need to consider cost when trying to choose between self defense videos and self defense training. Learning self defense from a good instructor can be very expensive. A lot of high level instructors will charge up to 00 a day. However, you could probably get self defense videos from that same instructor for a lot less. So you must also consider the cost benefit of self defense videos.
And of course there is the replay factor of self defense videos. To make sure you learn the moves completely, with videos you are able to slow them down and watch them over and over. This is very beneficial if you are the type of learner that needs to watch a move 3 or 4 times before you master it. This of course can also be done in person, but other students might get upset if they are used to a faster pace.
All in all, self defense videos can be just as good as one on one self defense training. You just need to make sure you only choose good videos that will teach you a system that works for you, and that you select a good instructor.
Can martial arts be self defense?

The age old question, are martial-arts self defense? The answer is, yes and no. For instance, martial arts obviously have self defense applications since they do contain some self defense moves. However, they are not just self defense. Instead of simply learning self defense, they also contain many aspects that become more of a lifestyle. This is why martial artists train for many years at a time and most self defense practitioners only need to train for a few months to defend themselves. Instead of training for the entire art, they only train for the most applicable techniques of self defense to keep them safe in the streets.
But how about true martial-arts self defense. Does that even exist? Of course systems have tried to be martial arts self defense systems but are they really good enough for the real world? Krav Maga and Systema are some examples of these. These arts have very little “fluff” involved and are almost entirely dedicated to teaching you self defense moves. However, they still cling to martial arts techniques, and this is there shortcomings. They still have an extra long learning curve with martial arts techniques that self defense systems do not have. You can certainly use these systems as martial arts self defense solutions, however they are not the best way to master proper self defense techniques. If you want to defend yourself, I recommend you find a competent self defense instructor that teaches a solid system specifically designed for reality based self defense(RBSD).
RBSD is very beneficial in that you are able to learn and master everything you need to know to defend yourself in a short amount of time. These self defense moves can be learned in just weeks and not many years of
