MMA Gloves – Is This For Us?

While one can buy many different clothing in sport stores for example from Zumba wear and weight lifting shoes to Tai Chi clothes, many people are looking for MMA gloves as the skyrocketing popularity of Mixed Martial Arts exercises…. Mixed martial arts uses a variety of MMA gloves some thicker while others smaller and open-fingered. Fists have lower chances of getting injured during punches, and the fighters have better opportunities of using their hands, thus making the matches all the more attractive. MMA gloves have to be lightweight, durable and allowing for mobility given the combination of techniques and strategies. If compared to other gloves, MMA items cost more and they are available in several categories. A fighter should use different MMA gloves for bag training and for fighting.

Knuckle irritations and cuts appear when the MMA gloves don’t fit you well, which makes bag or pad training very difficult and painful. This kind of injuries heal very slowly too. The same problem appears when you use too large MMA gloves; size matters

Mma Gloves

Small open-fingered MMA gloves were first worn in the practice of mixed martial arts to reduce the impact of blows on tissues. When the fighter has the possibility to use his hands freely without easily injuring the fists, the matches are more spectacular and entertaining. MMA gloves should be durable, lightweight and allowing for mobility given the alternation of strategies and techniques. If compared to other gloves, MMA items are more expensive and they are available in several categories. You have to check well before you make a purchase because some gloves are suitable for fighting but not for bag training, for instance.

When the MMA gloves are not suitable for pad or bag work you’ll notice that the skin gets cut and the knuckles irritate. It takes a pretty long time for such injuries to heal. Size matters greatly, you can’t find with too small or too large gloves. Therefore, the items should have a good fit. Durability is just as important as size, and if you ignore this aspect, you risk to make a bad purchase. MMA gloves protect not only the knuckle, but the wrist as well. You can order the items on eBay or Amazon or shop in more specialized stores that usually have higher prices.

The type of MMA gloves varies depending on category as well. Professional fighters for example wear four ounce (4 oz) gloves that provide less protection, while amateurs are officially required to wear heavier six ounce (6 oz) gloves for superior protection. The use of MMA gloves is a common feature with boxing and the state athletic and box commissions have had a very important role to play in the creation of the rules that require the wearing of special protective items during cage fighting. And the less experienced the fighters, the stricter the rules.

While in the US, official organizations have a lot of control over matches, not the same thing can be said about Europe or Japan where competitions have a high level of freedom. However, the use of MMA gloves is not necessarily subject to restrictions. The apparel items nevertheless remain an important and considerable subject of debate particularly since there are restrictions to the use of certain glove models as well. Normally the coach provides the best guidance possible for the choice of the MMA gloves.

MMA Gloves 101

When you begin your quest for a quality pair of MMA gloves, you are going to find 3 main brands: UFC, Fairtex and Combat sports. All 3 companies have great gloves, they just look a bit different and sometimes have their own unique design features.

UFC MMA Gloves

Most popular are the UFC brand. The UFC Official Fight cost about $54.99 and when you use them up- you will probably feel bad about throwing them away. This is the only glove approved to be worn by UFC fighters in the Octagon™. The only glove allowed in the Octagon® for all Ultimate Fighting Championship® events.

Combat Sports MMA Gloves

Recognized as the gear of champions Combat Sports is endorsed by world champion fighters, instructors, promoters and sanctioning bodies worldwide as the leader and innovator in MMA Gloves.

Combat Sports equipment is “Engineered for Top Performance”. Combat Sports has become one of the hottest brands in the Combat Sports equipment industry with over 25 distributors worldwide. Combat Sports’ collection of fighting gloves include both sparring and competition style gloves.

They have many varieties of gloves depending on your usage, whether it is training, mma fighting, etc. They have Mexican style pro training gloves, MMA Shin Guards, grappling shin guards, grappling gloves, mma rash guards, mma training gloves and more.

I do a lot of bag work, so I really like the wrist support of this glove. It has a really long strap that allows a double wrap. The glove also saves your hands from getting torn up with a good ¾ inches of padding.

Fairtex Gloves

Fairtex… I really love these gloves. I have used all brands of gloves- UFC, Combat Sports, Hayabusa, Century. None fit or perform quite like the Fairtex brand. The padding and wrist strap are excellent with the MMA competition gloves. The sparring gloves have a long wrist strap and also a bunch of padding.

Things to Consider

Before you run out and buy a pair of MMA Gloves, there are a few things to consider. How much are you willing to spend, how much does brand mean to you and what will you be using them for…

I recommend to my customers that training gloves do not have to be expensive. Why spend a fortune on gloves that will be used-up and sweaty?

Sometimes fighters buy gloves so they look cool- or until they get their first solid punch in the face. Get a good glove- don’t be concerned with how they look!

MMA Shin Guards

In mixed martial arts, there are 3 major types of shin guards: Grappling, kickboxing or striking and muay thai. Muay thai and MMA are both striking styles, while muay thai guards are more padded.

Grappling shin guards are designed to stay on when grappling and also provide padding when standing up. Most of these type have a sock type way of keeping the guard in place.

The Muay Thai shin guards are built to take heavy hits. These guards almost always have a re-enforcement down the front of the guard. The way they are kept on is not concerned with the ground game.

Striking style shin guards used in Kickboxing. Kickboxing shin guards are not as concerned with keeping the guard on when on the ground. I am still surprised at the guards lack of added padding along the front.
